Community
A synagogue is more than its services. At Beth Shalom, community happens in kitchens, hospital rooms, and folding chairs in the social hall. It happens whenever one member shows up for another.

The Chesed Committee
Chesed means loving kindness. Our chesed committee, chaired by Ruth Abelman, cares for members through life's hardest moments and its happiest ones.
- Meals delivered after a birth, a surgery, or a loss
- Rides to services and medical appointments
- Phone calls and visits to members who are homebound
- Help arranging a shiva minyan in a mourner's home
The committee includes about forty volunteers. Some cook once a year. Others make weekly calls. Every gift of time matters.
Tzedakah in Linden Hollow
We give beyond our walls. Members stock the Linden Hollow Community Pantry each month, and our High Holy Day food drive collects more than two thousand pounds of groceries every fall. Our teens volunteer at the county senior center throughout the school year.
Gathering Together
- A Sukkot dinner in the congregational sukkah
- Hanukkah candle lighting and latkes for the whole community
- A Purim carnival run by our b'nai mitzvah students
- Summer Shabbat picnics in the garden
Groups Within Our Community
Our Women's League, Men's Club, and young families group each plan their own programs through the year. The young families group meets monthly for playdates and holiday celebrations.
When my husband was in the hospital, dinner arrived every night for two weeks. I had not even told anyone yet.
