Learning
Jewish learning is a lifelong practice. At Beth Shalom, students begin in kindergarten and many keep studying well into their eighties. Our programs are led by Rabbi Miriam Kessler, Cantor David Abramov, and Education Director Leah Feldstein.

For Children
Our Hebrew school serves students from kindergarten through seventh grade. Classes meet Sunday mornings from 9:30 am to 12:00 pm and Wednesday afternoons from 4:30 pm to 6:00 pm for grades three and up. Students learn Hebrew reading, prayer, holidays, Jewish values, and the stories of our people.
Class sizes stay small, usually between eight and twelve students, so every child is known by name.
For B'nai Mitzvah Families
Preparation for becoming a bar or bat mitzvah begins about eighteen months before the date. Students work one on one with Cantor Abramov on their Torah and Haftarah portions and meet with Rabbi Kessler to write a d'var Torah. Parents join a series of family sessions on the meaning of the milestone.
For Adults
Adult education at Beth Shalom is open to members and the wider community. Programs include:
- Tuesday evening Torah study with Rabbi Kessler
- Beginning and intermediate Hebrew
- An Introduction to Judaism course for newcomers and interfaith partners
- A monthly book group and visiting scholar weekends
For the Whole Family
Several times a year we hold family learning mornings, where parents and children study together, cook holiday foods, and build projects for Sukkot and Hanukkah.
My daughter asks to go to Hebrew school. I never expected to say that.
Getting Started
Registration for the school year opens each May. New families may enroll at any time, and Leah Feldstein will meet with you to find the right class placement.
